It may be that nothing is planted under it...we used to spread a plastic like this and then plant through it. Strawberries, melons, pumpkins, tomatoes. I suppose other stuff could be planted this way, too. The first time we planted strawberries, we did it by hand. We cut a slit in the plastic and planted by hand. Then we got a planter...that was pulled behind a tractor...an example is here.
