It looks a bit like a fortress but I agree the setts are beautiful. Not an easy pattern to create. These are new ones from Portugal I suspect and would have looked even better tumbled to smooth their corners.
I doubt that the owner would have done that block paving himself. He'd have got serfs in to do it for him. Similarly, I don't believe it was Sir Christopher Wren who built St Paul's. He merely planned it.
